This workshop is devoted to multiscale aspects of mathematical modelling and analysis of transport processes and regulatory feedbacks in cell systems. Recent results and theoretical methods from multiscale analysis and nonlinear dynamics will be discussed in the context of applications to the study of the collective properties of biological systems.

The workshop will focus on two major biological processes:
  • cell differentiation and transformation
  • transport processes in a complex medium, with applications in developmental biology, neurobiology, tissue regeneration and cancer research.
Presentations will concern model building based on underlying biology and also mathematical methodologies applicable in construction and and analysis of the models. Special attention will be given to the connections between mathematical descriptions on different scales such as branching processes and transport equations, stochastic and deterministic models of anomalous diffusion, multi-compartmental models and structured population equations for cell differentiation, or microscopic and homogenised models of the processes in a multiscale medium.

The first workshop on Mathematical modelling of cellular biosystems was held at ICM in March, 2008.

The workshop is organised within the framework of the Polish-German Graduate College (Research Training Group 710), Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences and the PhD Programme: "Mathematical Methods in Natural Sciences".
